As we continue our series of throwback projects that define our approach to luxury window treatment design, we’re revisiting a formal living room in Marietta, Georgia. This is a space that still represents everything we believe custom drapery should be.

A grand first impression. Award-winning two-story drapery panels frame this formal living room, setting the tone for the entire home while honoring its architectural scale.

This project was awarded 2nd Place in the 2017 VISION Design Competition for Specialty Treatments, and years later, it remains a powerful example of thoughtful design, technical precision, and seamless execution.

Designing for Grand Architecture Without Competing With It

Designed for a custom-built home, this formal living room is the first space you see when walking through the front door. With a massive two-story window as its focal point, the challenge was clear: honor the scale of the architecture without overwhelming the room.

Pinch pleat drapery at a two-story scale requires precision from the very top. Custom hardware and carefully engineered headers ensure these panels hang beautifully, carry their weight, and maintain clean, tailored pleats from floor to ceiling.

Our solution was a pair of decorative stationary pinch-pleat drapery panels that frame the window beautifully while still allowing natural light to flood the space. The goal wasn’t to dominate the room, but to complete it.

Each panel measures an impressive 271 inches tall (over 22 feet) and weighs nearly 75 pounds, requiring careful planning from the very beginning.

Details matter at this scale. The transition between fabrics was thoughtfully planned so each pleat reads as intentional and balanced, allowing the panels to flow beautifully from floor to ceiling without visual interruption.

Specialty Fabrication at a Two-Story Scale

Each drapery panel blends three different fabrics into one cohesive design, a bold choice made possible through precise fabrication and material engineering. At this scale, details matter even more.

Every pleat was intentionally formed, and patterns were carefully matched and aligned across the full height of each panel, ensuring a seamless visual flow from floor to ceiling. To maintain consistency across the fabrics, we incorporated blackout lining and interlining, adding structure, weight, and complete light control, while preventing sunlight from revealing any variation between materials. This is the kind of behind-the-scenes craftsmanship that defines true luxury drapery.

Before and after: expansive windows become truly finished once drapery is introduced. Custom panels bring balance, softness, and intention, transforming architectural scale into a welcoming, livable space.
